Sir Ian Mills (1935-2022) founded Talk About Art (TAA) in 2016, driven by an unwavering belief in the transformative power of the arts. As a former accountant and dedicated philanthropist, Sir Ian’s vision extended far beyond conventional approaches to arts education and community engagement.
In response to increasing public sector austerity and a narrowing educational focus on academic subjects, Sir Ian recognised an urgent need to protect and nurture creative opportunities for young people. He understood that without intervention, a generation might miss out on the vital benefits that artistic expression brings, from enhanced mental wellbeing and social skills to creative problem-solving abilities.
Sir Ian’s vision for TAA was both innovative and far-reaching. He established an organisation that would not only provide access to the arts but would itself embody the creative, inclusive, and dynamic principles it championed. His particular focus was on reaching children and young people who might otherwise miss out on creative opportunities, ensuring that artistic expression remained accessible to all.
The organisation’s ability to evolve while staying true to its founding principles was tested during the Covid pandemic. When school absenteeism rose significantly, TAA adapted its mission to support disengaged students in Southeast London—a move that perfectly aligned with Sir Ian’s original vision of responsive, impactful community service.
Sir Ian’s dedication to TAA went beyond strategic leadership. Through the Elizabeth Legacy Trust, established in his wife’s name, he provided vital resources to ensure the organisation’s sustainable future. His commitment reflected a deep-seated belief that TAA’s approach could eventually benefit young people across the entire United Kingdom.
